Superior homes get gas from Xcel Energy, so if you smell gas, leave first and call 911 and Xcel at 1-800-895-2999. For leaks after the meter, new appliance branches and tests, call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Superior.

Superior's mix of homes
Superior is a suburban town off US-36 between Boulder and Denver that grew from a coal-mining and ranching settlement. Much of Original Town and the Sagamore neighborhood were rebuilt after the December 2021 Marshall Fire, so those homes have newer gas systems than many houses nearby. Rock Creek Ranch and other established neighborhoods have systems that have aged in place, often with flexible tubing and appliances that have been replaced once or twice.
A City of Louisville notice describes Xcel Energy gas service to the Louisville and Superior area, and its gas odor line is 1-800-895-2999.
The Town of Superior Building Department, operated by SAFEbuilt, issues permits through the Community Core portal. A permit is required to install a water heater, and an expansion tank is required when backflow prevention is on the water system.
New construction versus established homes
| Home type | Typical gas work |
|---|---|
| Rebuilt homes in Original Town or Sagamore | Adding outdoor lines or appliances later |
| Established neighborhoods | Connector replacement, leak repair, upsizing |
| Any home adding a tankless heater | Line sizing and a permit |
| Any home with flexible tubing | Confirming the bonding connection |
Signs of trouble
- A rotten-egg smell: leave, then call
- Hissing near an appliance or the meter
- Yellow burner flames
- Soot near a fireplace or vent
- A gas bill that jumps without explanation
When to schedule
Late summer is the best window for non-urgent gas work, before heating season. If you are planning an outdoor kitchen, fire pit or patio heater, get the line in before the ground freezes. For a water heater replacement, remember the Town permit and the expansion tank requirement when backflow is present, and plan the swap before the old unit fails.
Homes that came through the Marshall Fire but were not rebuilt may also deserve a look, especially if they had smoke or heat exposure, since connectors, valves and exposed piping can be affected. A pressure test and a visual check of the appliance connections are a reasonable step if you have any doubt. For homes that were rebuilt, keep the permit and test records from the new construction; they are useful if you add an appliance later and need to know how the system was sized.
